At Honda we used the number 15% for loss between engine crank and drive
wheel for power loss. This is the number R&D gave us for chain drive
bikes when we used chassis dyno. For shaft drive the number was about
the same. This loss represents power going through internal gear box
and chain drive or bevel gears on shaft drive.
Keep in mind the gears are always in mesh with oil in teeth. Oil
viscosity is the main culprit in power loss. The 20% number is not far off.
When we ran engines on an electric dyno we could measure the engine
internal friction by motoring the engine with the dyno and measure the
beam load. The engine was hot when we did this.
BY
Mazda measures the the motoring friction on every rotary engine assembled.
I saw them do it when I was at the factory.
The 20% number is overall drive train loss. The loss for a single
planetary set is much lower. Less than 5%.
