I saw a one hour documentary on Japanese TV tonight about the rotary engine
development team as well as the Renesis.

Quite shocking to know that when Ford took over almost everyone was
transferred out of the rotary design section. The documentary showed many
scenes of the rotary line shut down.  The Renesis engine and the RX-8 came
about from the dedicated efforts of about 10 employees who refused to give
up.  Yamamoto encouraged  them not to give up on the dual side port even
though he had tried that configuration unsuccessfully before.  Designing the
water flow paths and location were critical for their success. A lot of
their work was done in their private time.  I'll see if I can get you a
copy.

I called the studio today and I can get some,... atlas in Japanese only. VHS
format.  There is always a chance a US network would buy the rights to it
and have it dubbed.  The scenes of the early research with the engineers
watching the rotary running through a thick quartz ?? window is priceless.
Also the early failures of the Renesis side ports clogged with carbon is
food for thought,  Ditto the lost wax model of the internal cooling system.
