We wouldn't need a split case if a hardened hollow drive shaft went to a
taper on the front and a tapered hub or prop plate was held there with a
large nut. We would be back to using a thrust bearing in the vicinity of the
planetary connection plate to resist the thrust of the prop but side loads
could still be handled through split sleeves or ball bearings. The case once
more becomes  pipe like and the innards are slipped in from behind.

Been there done that Doug.
The trick is to make the shaft big enough so it slips in the case
with out a flange. However where are you going to get plain bearing
shells big enough if you do away with the needles? We need plain
bearings to get oil to the CS prop.
