I'd like to learn more about using a taper vs a spline for the prop hub.
Could either of you offer any additional commentary on that?
Thanks

Ken,
Me too!
I had a quick look on the Internet and found reference to 'Morse Taper'
which is 5/8" per foot. I haven't checked the Mazda taper as yet.
There are 'Taper Locks' devices available also, but I kinda like the
idea of
having a keyway like the Mazda e-shaft.
Anything over 16 degrees isn't considered self-locking and shallow tapers
are considered the best 'self - locking'.
There are a number of slightly different tapers designed by different
companies for different applications ( I suppose).
If you find anything more appropriate to our particular needs, you
would be
so kind as to share the information.

The best reference I know for information on tapers is the book
_Machinery's Handbook_ that has been published in consecutively numbered
editions since early in the last century. There are dozens, if not
hundreds, of "standard" tapers. Many of them were developed and
promoted by particular machine tool companies. (It reminds me of the
current camera flash memory situation.)
A taper that might be appropriate for this application is the taper that
Continental used on the range of air cooled Standard Military Engines
that they developed during the 1960's for general purpose military use.
It is 0.200 inches/inch or about 11.3 degrees.
