Here is a trick I learned from Tracy Crook.
Ford PSRU gears are hard as hell. They are not
powdered metal.
Tough to cut. Even with a carbide cutting tool.

Trick is to mount a hand or bench grinder on the
tool post
holder of your lathe and run both while you are
cutting
off excess material. This is the five inch ring gear
that
needs to be cut down.

Is that the abrasive wheel you're going to cut with?
It looks to be about 1/8" thick. I have been using the
very thin .05" abrasive discs in a similar grinder for
cutting steel and even aluminum with good results.
They cut fast and clean with less load on the tool.
The downside is they wear down quickly.
