Is the stock 2nd gen. Mazda oil cooler still the unit of choice?

The Mazda 2nd gen are getting rare and expensive. That is your best bet.
I suspect Mazda bought those oil coolers OEM from an
American company called Modine. Modine was one of the first companies to
put
turbulators inside the oil cooler passages greatly improving the heat
transfer.
The Mazda 2nd gen have the turbulators. I noticed Mark Steitle had a
Modine on
his 3 rotor. Here is a pic. Where did you buy it Mark?

Dave Leonard also seems to be having good luck with a Setrabe.

I got lucky...got it off ebay. They are very sturdy coolers. The one I
have was actually made by Fluidyne, and marketed by Modine. Its called
the Therm-Hx (

in various configurations.

That is interesting. I'll bet it was the other way around. Modine made
it
and Fluidyne marketed it. Fluidyne is a small marketing company here in
LA.

That may be the case. When I was researching this a few years back, I
had absolutely no luck finding a Modine web site that gave me any useful
information on their line of oil coolers. Anyway, they appear to be one
and the same product.

Modine is set up primarily for OEM. Fluidyne probably did a deal
where they agreed to buy x number of coolers a year. That was the
way it worked when I was in the retail biz.
