A picture of the inside of the rotor housing would not do you much
   good unless it was taken exactly aligned with the port center line.
   That would take a camera that could focus in a few inches. Most
   cameras need at least 1.5' to focus. With Paul's style of ports there
   is no dog leg so you could take it from outside the housing.
       The hole comes through a curved surface. With an off axis picture
   the shape would not be telling of what is really there.
        Purely speculation, but I bet that the hole is round and the
   optical illusion created by the intersection of the hole with the
   curved surface is what make people think it is not round. Of course I
   wouldn't bet much.

FYI:  Many (most?) digital cameras have a 'macro' focus mode.  I have
taken pictures as close as 2" (5cm) with my cheapie little Canon while
using macro mode.  On the Canon, the macro mode is identified by a
little flower symbol and MF (macro focus?)..  The newer Canons shoot
down to less than 2cm.

housing from a real Lemans engine. They are even more
rare than 1967 Cosmo's
