What is special about an S-beam? From the pictures I have seen, it
appears to be a piece of steel bent into a channel shape.
Is this correct?

Not exactly a channel. It is .063" wall 4130 steel bent into
a box shape. It takes a pretty good press brake to make this.
It was not cheap.
