My wife's mother board failed.
I took both her hard drives out and
installed them in another computer I had.
It starts to boot gets well past the bios but it hangs up
were it says on the screen "Starting Windows" above a wide
white line.
Does Windows 2000 only work on the mother board it
was installed on?

NO... Windows (all versions) are installed on the hard disk and
they will run on any Windows compatible hardware. If your wife's
machine ran windows before from W-98 to W-xp, it should run W-2K without
problems.
Perhaps it's not the motherboard...? Could it be a drive
problem...? Could it be a Windows problem in, and of, itself...?

I suspect it does not like the video card. I think the first
time you install Windows it figures out the video card.
Then if you change video cards it cannot adapt. I could
be wrong.
In any event Robin wants a new notebook computer so
I will take her C drive and convert it to a slave and copy
everything off it to the USB 3.5 gig back up drive. That worked.
