Short answer...it depends on what's different.  It is probably
stopping while trying to install hardware drivers that were for the
other system. You can "Safe-Boot" using F8 on start-up to bypass
non-essential hardware driver installations. Then have it discover
new hardware and install new drivers after you get it booted in
"Safe-Mode".

Hi Paul -
Thre is a risk of trashing the chipset on the motherboard. The Serial
( old rs - 232 ) ports tend to get totalled. If you turn off all
onboard interfaces you can turn off in Bios Setup , maybe you can get
away with it.  The is rather like some  linux / BSD installers
installing different kernels for different CPU's   eg AMD or Intel.
