Tony,
The Cosmo bell housing has a depth of  167mm  =  6.6 inches.  So, it is a
little deeper than the 2nd gen manual housing that Paul has pictured.
The Cosmo weighs 13.0 lb and Paul measured the 2nd gen manual one a few
months ago to weigh 7.5  lb.  Another consideration is whether the flex
plate that fits Tracy's resilient spline adapter will mate with the
starter gear if you change to a different bell housing.   The Cosmo flex
plate has a larger diameter and does not fit Tracy's spline adapter.

Well I think if you use the corresponding flex plate that is used
on the stock bell housing that you acquire it shouldn't be an
issue at all. The starter is at the correct depth but you still
have to order the proper length shaft on the redrive. The reason
you have to use a certain year flex plate now, is obviuos because
the redrive shaft is a preset depth. As far as the spline drive
bolting up to all years of flex plate is still an unknown but as
far as I can tell that spline drive plate is the easiest part of
the entire unit to recreate if the mounting holes need to be
repositioned. here is a pic of the bell housing it's 7 1/4in
deep,

Tony I called John. The third gen man tx bell is a little
less than 6.25 inches deep. The dia of the ring gear IS
an issue.
