The smart money will go and immediately get an Intel based Mac.
Paul you are too smart and too creative to not be on the best and
nicest equipment.
On the new Macs you can run Windows, when you have to....
Linux when you don't care to be bothered by MS ....
and Mac OS all the rest of the time.
When we were 15 computers, 20 years ago, we stopped using Windows.
Today we are 100+ and counting, 98% are Macs, ( the rest are some
pretty dog-tired Sun Workstations) and essentially all we do is
engineering work.

Naw I'll stick with Intel Linux Gnome and Redhat and one or
two Windows computers for stuff I can't get on Linux.
I have everything set up for that scenario.

Reeves, I'm a forum lurker who's interested in rotary engine
installations in homebuilt aircraft. I'm interested in whether or not
you or your colleagues have any experience running SolidWorks
Office on
the new Intel-based Macs. I was a MacIntosh afficionado for years
until
I began using SolidWorks several years ago. I would love to get
back to
using a Mac if I could run SW (2006) just as fast as I presently
can on
my Win XP Pro. If a new Mac would work for me, this Pentium IV
would go
to my daughter (or into the trash). She'd be delighted to get it
because
she has had very little exposure to Macs.

It works so well, its scary. Recent post from a SW user on
Macintouch.com :
"Just so everyone is jealous of me, I have the 64-bit version of
Solidworks running on my Mac Pro and it's a screamer. I have no
idea if
my hard-drives are running slow like so many posts have stated i.e.:
http://macprojournal.com/xp.html , but I suspect they are (defragment
took FOREVER!). Be that as it may, even with all the hardware issues I
still have Solidworks is AWESOME on the Mac Pro, even better than any
other Intel box I've used."
However, do your daughter a favor- throw the old box in the trash.

The bad part of this story is that the Mac has to use Windows in
order to run SW and also AC. This may be changing as we speak as
rumor has it that both companies are meeting with Apple. I would not
be surprised if Rhino is thinking along the same lines. I hope it
happens soon. If it does I will buy an intel mac and sign up for SW
classes immediately. Jerry
