I just upgraded Linux Fedora 3 to Fedora 5.

I am so happy. Another nail in the coffin of my Windows
computer. My Panasonic/Leica digital camera now works
with Red Hat Fedora 5. No more extra steps getting pictures
into the newsletter files. Just plug it into the USB port.

They also added a nice feature. You can verify the accuracy
of the DVD installation disks before you use it to upgrade.

$50 bucks with a big thick book. 1060 pages of stuff
way more than you will ever need to know.

After the copyright/sue scare the price went to over $1,000. When did
the price come back down from the stratosphere?

Is the $50 version supported with automatic downloads - upgrades -
fixes? Fedora 1 wasn't and you were pretty much on your own. Some
stuff didn't work and I was spending lots of time trying to find the
appropriate fix, compiling, installing, etc. I don't like Windoze and
Gates, especially Gates, but I want to do something besides software.
I spent almost 30 years doing software and now I want to do something
else.

I bought the book in Borders book store. Came with a DVD
and two CD. The second CD had over 1000 programs in
rpm format. No nothing other than a vast amount of support
on the Internet. We have a couple of good Linux
gurus on this list.

There is always some program that does not
work on an upgrade but they are getting better every version.
More and more new hardware is getting direct support.
I have been using xpaint for years and now it is
suddenly busted but apparently I just have to recompile it.

extract the files
   "tar -jxvf xpaint-2.7.8.1.tar.bz2"
change into the source directory
   "cd xpaint-2.7.8.1"
run the configure script
   "./configure"
compile the code
    "make"
install the binaries "as the root user"
    "make install"
clean up the source and package
"cd ../"
"rm -rf xpaint-2.7.8.1*"

I know how you feel. I programed in asm for about 15 years
and got burned out.

Each upgrade RH Fedora is getting more and more painless.
I can't imagine it getting better than this.
I have been using Linux for seven or eight years now.

If you want some real hassle upgrade the hardware
in your Windows xp computer. If you put in a larger
HD and try to re-install from the original xp disk
your computer will crash within 30 days unless you get
permission from Bill Gates again. Good luck if you need a
new mother board. When you buy xp you need to get
permission from Bill Gates to run it. After you get
permission he puts your exact computer configuration
in his data base along with your name and address.

Which book? I searched Amazon.com and found a bunch, most with 2 CDs.
I have been burned so often by the blurbs on the cover(s) that I value
a user's input, particularly yours.

I had to replace the motherboard on one of our computers running XP.
When I called MS on the phone, they asked if it was running on another
computer. I told them no, I had to replace the motherboard. They gave
me the right code with no more hassle. Took maybe 5 or 10 minutes. I
still don't like Windoze and Gates, but in all fairness this was
relatively painless. Thanks for the long article on what is being sent
to MS, and how it is encoded.

Rhino arrived today. So the long process of learning how to use it
begins. I worked through the first section this evening. As an
ex-computer graphics programmer, I am delighted at its capabilities --
this stuff is soooo hard to do, although object oriented programming
helps enormously.
