The wiring on Al's alternator looks a bit odd. Shouldn't one of the wires go
to the light?

Not odd, but, perhaps, different - and there is no light.  The alternator
has in internal regulator, and normally internal field current supply, after
initial excitation via the light circuit .  I went in and un-did the
connection for internal field current so I could have external control, and
can have over-voltage protection in the circuit.  You then connect both tabs
to field current circuit.
