What would be wrong with a single Mazda rotor 80-130 hp at 240lbs ( all up)
George ( down under)

George (down under),

A single rotor Mazda would also be a good choice for the Mini-Imp, as
far as I'm concerned. In fact I think all up weight could be well under
200 pounds because with the direct drive fan we don't need a 40 pound
gearbox.

Regards,

Gordon.

The big problem with a shaft drive, and a Mini Imp requires a
shaft drive, is the severe low frequency torsional resonance
problem. The prop acts like a flywheel on the end of a long shaft
and you are feeding it one huge torque pulse per engine
rev.  Molt had his problems with a four cylinder engine
that puts out two smaller torque pulses per engine rev.
You ain't seen anything yet until you try a 1.3 liter single
rotor engine or a 650 cc single cylinder two cycle engine. Or even
a 1.3 L two cylinder four cycle engine. All put out one
large equivalent torque pulse per engine revolution.

Stick with a small all aluminum two rotor if you can find one.
Diamond aircraft is sitting on a great one if you can talk
the owner Christian Dries into selling them. (George P,
If you can send Chris a blanket purchase order for
100 a year I think he would go back into production.
Unlike Wankel Gmbh they have the inventory and the
where with all.)

It is as least as good torque pulse wise as a 4 cylinder.

Or better yet use the 200 pound 100 HP  O-200 and run a decent
dia. more eff. prop. No liquid cooling system required.

Mazda Wankel engines are great but they are not the best
for all applications.
