I can offer from experience that dealing with all the RTV off the bolts
during a teardown is an unbelievable pain in the butt.  What a mess.  No
one will be happier than I if there is in fact a better way...

Why not cut a hole in a Corn Flakes box (empty) the size of the bolt holes
in the housings, insert a bolt, apply the spiral of silicone and then
carefully remove the bolt. Let dry and install in the engine. If you wanted
to make the bolts easy to clean up later you could heat shrink them first.
