This is an interview in the news paper financial section probably
done at or in conjunction with Seven Stock with the CEO of
Mazda Hisakazu Imaki.
Very, very good news for rotor heads all over the world.
Thank you Hisakazu Imaki san from all of us rotor heads
on here.

So how much longer is the 16 B bare block than the 13B? Weight
difference? Would it be ~20% more powerful than a comparable 13B?
Brian Trubee
40 mm longer or 1.57 inches longer.
I doubt in side port form it would have 20% more power than
an RX8 engine. Maybe a little. It will probably have 20% more
torque in the low RPM ranges around 2000 to 5000 RPM. After that
raw breathing ability starts to affect the HP and the side ports
will have the same area and timing as the RX8 engine more or less.
However in P-port form with a larger slide throttle (2.5" OD)
my guess is it may have well over 360 HP at 8500 to 9000 RPM.
At 7500 RPM it should be well over 300 HP.
Wide rotors and bigger p-ports are the way to go.
2.5" dia. p-ports have over 50% more area than 2" dia. p-ports.
IMHO to top it all off the BSFC should be slightly better.
In the RX8 the axle ratio will probably be changed
to slow the cruise RPM from 4000 at 80 MPH to more
like 2500 to 3000 RPM at 80 MPH. This will cut
engine friction HP loss. This will yield better
MPG at the higher cruise RX8 cruise speeds.
Here is an old rotary engine friction chart from
Ansdale. The side seal friction will be the same
on the 16B as compared to the RX8 engine as a function
of RPM. Only the apex seal friction will increase 20%.
However since the engine will be running at a lower RPM all
friction losses will be reduced. Another factor in the better
BSFC of the 16B.
BTW Mazda checks the friction on all rotary engines after
they come out of final assemble. If the friction is too low
there are parts missing. If it is too high there is something
else wrong. The rack on the right holds the cheap nylon lines
that feed oil to the apex seals :)
Then all engines are run on a dyno.
Last 2 jpgs. If the glass of wine test shows any ripples
when the engine is running on the dyno the engine is running
too rough and is rejected.
