Hi Paul,
IIRC, that early VW bus unit ratio was about 0.7, not really what we
want.
I saw one fitted to an Alum. Buick V8 about 20 years ago and installed
in a Piper Pawnee.
It may have been a glider tug; I think it was the subject of an
accident investigation though the cause was not failure of the
powerplant.
I have a vague notion it was fuel starvation. .... not surprised :)

For an axel reduction guys, I was looking at the H1 Hummer as a
possible donor. The ratio was at least 1.5:1 and the gears are far far
tougher than the ones in a VW bus. I rejected the gearset because I
needed more reduction but it held promise otherwise.

btw I checked and the ratio is 1.92:1 on the hunmmer axles
