At the present layout of the Rotary, the crankshaft rotates three times
rotor speed and the housing is stationary, in theory there is no load on
the 2:3 gearing between rotor and housing. ( in practis there is due to
vibrations).

If power is taken off from the rotor as proposed by Vance in the sketch,
then the said gearing will be loaded by full engine torque. This is not
practical. A gearing set will have to be at both rotor ends to avoid
skewing and seizure of the rotor. Also, there is no space to attach the
universal joint to the rotor when the side wall is fully covering the
total chamber area toward the centre.

The best, I think, is still a planetary as duly promoted by Paul.

I did a design with a scotch yoke including a center bearing, but alas
not any lighter or very practical. some kind of gearbox is really needed.
