Paul,
How about a steam cycle rotary? Do you think there is enough heat in the
rotor and the housing to support such an idea?

The fuel injector is mounted very close to the intake port, and the
water injector is mounted between the spark plugs.

After normal startup, run and full power requirements the fuel injector
cycle is changed to miss every second injection, while the water is
timed to inject at plug firing time on the rotor face which missed a
fuel charge. The injection cycle then becomes fuel/water/fuel/water etc.

The result would be a reduction of fuel usage, a water usage, an
alternate power stroke due to steam, an internal cooling of the rotor
and the housing and a reduction in the average temperature of the
exhaust gases.

Total power output would be reduced, and if around 70% it would be very
useful. Another benefit would be that the loss of water jacket cooling
may not be such a big event.

Alternatively the system could be considered as an emergency only system
to be used when water jacket cooling has failed.

It may be time to do some calculations.

I understand what you have in mind, but the rotary is probably poorly
suited to use this cycle on a regular operation basis. The reason is
that any type of water introduced into the combustion chamber tends to
"steam clean" that chamber. In a piston engine that area is confined by
the rings fairly well (and there are usually more than one) on the
rotary the tip seals and side seals require lubrication. Most of us will
mix a little oil into the fuel or run the injection pump. Water in the
combustion chamber will scour the oils from the chamber this could cause
high wear or lockup. It might be a potential back up "limp home" for any
water cooled engine though.
