I have a midget mustang with a lycoming O320 that is 150 hp. I want to
upgrade to 180 hp or so and was interested in the rotary since I have an
RX7 and love the car. I just have no idea what it would cost to revamp
the plane and what the end results would be; in weight, hp, performance
at alt, etc.
Also, the work is more than I would begin to be able to tackle so it
would add cost for it to be done by someone else.

I am in Nebraska and the plane is flyable but the engine will need to be
replaced in about a year. I could get it to Cali but staying there for
more than two weeks would be a problem. But if you know anyone in the
Midwest it would make it easy to fly down and leave it for longer. If
you can put me in touch with someone who has done this to a mustang, or
replaced a 150hp engine, I could find out if it is feasible for me.

It will take more than two weeks unless you get all the parts
together ahead of time. Mazdtrix can build or rebuild an engine
so that would be here. Jerry Hey can build a motor mount and ship
it to me. You will need a PSRU and EFI from Tracy. You will
also need a prop. The cowling would be a problem and a major
project unless we used simple cooling to get you back home.
I'll try to talk to the guy doing the work. He is a UAL pilot
so he is here and gone often. He builds Czech turbo prop Legends
on a regular basis. He has a couple of employees that work full time.
Dan has built three other airplanes. A Quickie a Questair and a
Berkut. He is also a great test pilot. Here is a picture of Dan's
airplane over SZP.
I can store all this stuff in my hangar until the time comes to
do the assembly. I also have an apartment upstairs in the hangar
you can stay in for awhile. Downtown Santa Paula is 3 blocks
from the airport. Tie downs at SZP are $75 a month.
