    Hi Paul;
    I believe this one is still up for debate.
    I believe a lot of racing exhausts are done from the inside because it
    is easier for people and machines.
    In this case, I see a failure right at the edge of a thick weld
    (hardpoint), stress riser(both material and thermal).
    I would also have a few tacks on the outside and a 'cooling' enclosure
    with airflow.

 Who is to say that the performance guys always get it right? If you
have a super thick tube it might not matter.  But if you want to run a
thinner tube inside is best. Of course if you want to get your manifold
stress relieved and shot peened it might not matter either, it would
just cost twice as much! The bike guys have always used a spigot and
slipover on most high performance systems. Here is a version I did aome
time ago. The retention bolt system could be simpler but the idea is
obvious.
