I do notice on the newer composites, that the inlets have
moved out------ away from the spinner, with big lips (top and bottom) to
avoid stalling the airflow entering (or at least avoiding separation)
during climb.
originally, my cowl mocked what I saw at Reno. the intake extended to
within a 1/4" of the prop. when I noticed rpm loss on steep climb outs I
cut it back several inches. I didn't notice any power loss/gain (just seat
of the pants observations) at level flight. I intended to build a larger
radiused intake, but never did. so, not everything at Reno should be copied
(for example, tiny rudders). kevin (that's why it's called experimental
:-)
Then there are cuffs and Paul Lipps props.
