Hi Paul;
I believe this one is still up for debate.
I believe a lot of racing exhausts are done from the inside because it
is easier for people and machines.
In this case, I see a failure right at the edge of a thick weld
(hardpoint), stress riser(both material and thermal).
I would also have a few tacks on the outside and a 'cooling' enclosure
with airflow.

The OBX  RX8 exhaust maifolds  on Ebay are all welded on the outside.

I forgot to add that my homemade exhaust on my Lyc O-320 is welded
on the inside and hasn't cracked yet. (Only 300 hours)

If the RX8 tubes  only over hang a few inches the load on the joint is
less. Might be OK but why take a chance?

Paul Lamar ...No rotor no motor.

The stock RX-8 manifold has a welded outer steel shell, but a set of
floating inner SS, slip tubes.  Cutting the outer shell just after the
first bend will expose the inner tube slip joint.
