is the idea here that the "L" bracket ;grows; with the pipe joint when
it expands under heat

Dave,
Yes the bracket grows with the tube while allowing the vibration not to
crack the tube at the flange. Bikes often use springs to hold the pipe
on. Just two hook shaped tabs on the pipe there. On the rotary the temps
are high enough to anneal simple steel springs. You would have to get
some in inconel or x-700. I think the bolt system will work fine. The
setup shown shows lots of weld on the tabs, in fact short tacks around
1/4 lon would be better. It was just easier to draw this way.
