has anyone had any success downloading Kenichi Yamamoto's Rotary
Engine
book from the 'manuals' address?
All I get is a pdf with a bunch of blank pages!

Worked ok for me as well.
There are some empty pages at first, at the front and also at the end.
Try to go down several pages and text will appear.
The book also confirms the linear relationship between piston travel and
volume change.
I also would like to express my thanks for the great link.

OK. Rotor travel, Sorry.
PS.: I look at it like a piston in a Recip going up and down with an
additional rotation to it all. The stroke is 3*E = 45 mm, RX8.
Since the 'piston' rotates, it is a different 'animal' and should be
called differently, namely a rotor. No argument.

It is not exactly like there is no precedent for calling it
a piston. I have heard terms like "rotary piston engine".
Particularly in Europe. Just adds to the rampant confusion IMHO.
I am amazed that so few people in the automotive world
still don't understand how it works after almost 50 years.

The only person ever writing about it that correctly likened
it to a gas turbine. Particularly in the P-port version.
There never is a physical barrier between the incoming
air and the exhaust gases. Unlike a gas turbine however
it does not compressor stall :)
