This will knock your socks off. Must reading.

Vertical take off, 200mph, and fifteen patents, extremely creative. This is
to be a kit and they talk about alternative engines but have not included a
Wankel 13b in their commentary at this point. Will have to get to
them.
This sounds like a new Burt Rutan.

Are there Wankels in helicopters with vertical orientation?

I don't think so :) Been around for ten years. Got a lot of
tax and investment money. NOTHING worked as predicted. Crashed
several times. Just a plain old gyrocopter.

Paul Lamar

Paul,
I respectfully disagree. The Carter copter, while frought with many
setbacks continues to progress. The fact is that the technology
demonstrator has demonstrated 170+ knot and mu1 flight. That is
certainly not "just another gyrocopter. The crashes have been when
demonstration efforts have been made to do something no gyrocopter has
done, like true vertical TO. While I'm not really interested myself,
due
to the obvious high cost of the system, it is interesting technology.
They are progressing and admancing the state-of-the-art of rotor wing
aircraft. I wish them good luck.
Bill Jepson

I am still not impressed.

As I recall the run of the mill Black Hawk helicopter
flies at 160 kts and WILL take of vertically. The V22 takes
off vertically and flies at 250 knots.

Paul Lamar ...No rotor no motor.

Interesting project - some of the performance claims are, ahem,
optimistic.
See Juan de la Cuervo/Pitcairn for jump VTO in the beginning.
See also Sikorsky S-72/Xwing, Canadair CL-84 Dynavert.
Cheers
Cary

Not to mention the Moller sky car taking off vertically
and flying at 300 kts :)

You guys are funny.  You want to encourage people to use, oh my gosh,
rotary engines in their aircraft and want all kinds of support then you
stand back and laugh at other people trying to promote their cause.

Where is the professionalism in that?

Oh that's right, we do this for free!

Rick Irwin
I'm building a plane!
And It might even be rotary!

--------------------------------------------------------

I don't quite get your point Rick.
There are too many people that promote their "cause" and
take other people's money without producing results.
They frequently stretch the laws of physics to promote
their cause in the first place. The project drags on for
as long as they can get more money. Experimental
aviation is the happy hunting ground for these people.

The Moller Sky Car is a classic example.

In this case this is a simple gyrocoptors with wings.
Why does it take ten years to see if it works or does not
work? The original idea was to fold or stop the rotors
in flight and fly on the wings alone. It is obvious that anybody
that knows anything about gyrocopters or helicopters knows
that you cannot stop the rotors in flight. If you do they
collapse due to aerodynamic loads as they have no bending
strength. They remain near flat and support the craft because
they ARE ROTATING due to centrifugal force. If you ask me how
to do it I would stop the gyrocopter and the rotors at 10,000
feet, fold the rotors and recover from the resulting stall spin
with a few thousand feet to spare on the wings alone :) Pass out
barf bags to the passengers and be ready with the defibrillator.

There was an aircraft developed with a lot of British Gov money
called the Gyrodyne. Hope springs eternal.

We hear about one "new rotary engine" a month on here.
The "inventors" are looking for ignorant suckers in one way
or another that will give them money. I don't publish them. In
some cases they were invented years ago and rejected then because
it violated the laws of physics or the requirements for a true
rotary engine.

See http://www.rotaryeng.net/What-is-a-rotary-engine4.txt

These scams reflect badly on the Wankel engine, engineering,
experimental aviation and all science for that matter.

If a guy is doing it out of his own pocket I have
absolutely NO PROBLEM with that. More power to him.

Paul Lamar ...No rotor no motor.

Hi Rick;
I have followed the CarterCopter development periodically
since about 2000.
When I said it was an interesting project - I actually meant it.
They have done some interesting stuff.  I wish them luck and I
hope no one is killed.

However, as noted, they did not invent some things being said.

Outrageous/unsubstantiated claims deserve challenge...
Too many people have been killed/ripped off in this silly sport.
If Cartercopter breaks the world altitude record and/or 500mph
I will be the first to congratulate them.

May your dream not meet a realistic end.
Cheers
Cary
