HUGE SNIP>>>
Guys... gotta get my 2 cents worth in here....
I found that on my gyroplane installation, the remote assembly
vibratedloose when attached to the engine or it's direct attachments....
yet when I
attached it to the frame (the firewall or engine mount) the system
workedfabulously.
The small vibrations of the engine, redrive, and prop should not be
overlooked as a failure point contribution system when attaching hoses
with
pseudo lever arms to these threaded attachments.
Mounting the remote filter system past the rubber bushing engine mounts
will
provide a pound of prevention!! and oh.. btw.. the same is true for
ignition coils as well!
Ok, my 2 cents worth... we now return to your regularly scheduled
transmissions!

Thanks for all the great feedback. Here's another question: the
Renesis oil filter is tiny. If I am remote mounting, the oil filter
could be anything. Is there any benefit to going with a different oil
filter than the one Mazda has specified for this engine? (I see the
big Fram on this pic).

Mounting on the firewall sounds like the best option, especially as you can
put the filter in an easily reached place and mount it so it won't spill oil
all over. Here's one remote mount series with lots of mounting/hose
configurations (all are aluminum):

You'd also need an adapter for the engine block. I don't know which would
work for Mazdas

On a related note: Aircraft Spruce sells a "Cool Collar" that is just a
corrugated AL heat-sink (fins) that wraps around the filter. It sells for
about $33, which seems high to me. But the idea may be worthwhile,
especially if you had a spot that happened to have good cool airflow anyway.
I think a few pounds "invested" in more oil is probably weight well spent.
As a bonus, bigger filter will give more filter media and also more surface
area for cooling. If I ever get a small leak in flight, I'd be thankful for
any extra oil aboard.
