I see where Road & Track think the new RX7 will have a electric
assisted turbo. I thought Mazda was going to do that a few years ago.
Here is a press release from Car and Driver back in June 2004.
Also a picture I took at the Geneva auto show a few years back of an electric
assisted turbo on an RX8 hydrogen engine.
Meanwhile Borg Warner gets a PACE award from Automotive News for
the Variable Turbine Geometry. Perhaps it is not up to the exhaust heat of
a rotary.
No mention of the 16B (3.2 L). Perhaps the 16B showed no fuel consumption advantage.
Of course a turbo is way cheaper than a whole new engine.
I also don't know why they're waiting for the new RX7.
The RX8 needs better low RPM acceleration immediately.
The trick is to keep the current 10:1 compression ratio for economy and deal with potential
detonation. One way is to add anti detonation fluid as needed when the intake
manifold temperature rises above about 150 degrees F. Windshield
washer fluid will probably work. No boost if you are out of windshield
washer fluid.
