Start with QuickBASIC.

In fact here it is.

Store it in a folder called QB under C:\ and unzip it.

goto: all programs > accessories > command prompt and click on it.
type this in sequence
"cd .." press enter
do this repeatedly until you get only "C:\>"
then type "cd QB" press enter
then type "QB" and press enter.

Find an old book on Quick BASIC. There is online help as well.

type Print "Hellow" press enter.
Click on "run" and you have written your first BASIC program.

PICAXE Basic is a variation. Actually simpler than QB.

   An easier method to do this in DOS is:

       Click "Start", then "Run".  In the blank line type "cmd" or
"command",  This will invoke a DOS window, where you will find a DOS
prompt (C:\).  Then:

       Type: "CD C:\QB"        This will direct the O/S to the QB
   folder (directory)... well, er, directly...
       Type: "QB"                  This will invoke the QB.zip program,
   provided that you have WinZip (or other) on your computer.

   Simple...

   Alternatively, in Windows, you could "Right-Click on 'Start'".
Left-click on "explore".  This will invoke the Windows Explorer
program.  From here, navigate to the QB folder and locate the QB.zip
program.  Double-click on this file to invoke the unzipping program.
