How far do you have the engine from the firewall?  I think
Perry's in only a couple of inches... I'm trying to snug mine up as
close as possible.  Here are a couple of pictures with the engine
positioned...
Still have to figure out what to do with the Turbo and intake... Sticks
up just a little... Also, need to finish the firewall before I weld the
MM braces. I want to ensure there is no interference between the
controls and the MM.

Mike C.

I am going to move it closer.

Are you going to use a jack screw linear actuator as a front strut
mount. Great idea.
I think Burt Rutan would be really interested in this. Imagine a
vectored thrust Long EZ. Should help with takeoff and maybe landing.
Should turn like an F35 :)

Hi Paul
The design I'm working on is a simple wheel (like a trim wheel)
that is 30:1 geared using a push pull lube to a bell crank.  Trying to
keep it simple.  I'll send some pictures when I get it all working.
There is some issues with integrating the x-brace as it looks like it
will interfere with the oil pan... So side braces to the spar may be the
way to go.  Sure wish I didn't need them... That would solve a lot of
interference problems when the engine pitches +/- 10 deg.  Can you show
a drawing in Rhino with the Engine pitched +/- 10 deg so I can determine
the minimum distance from the firewall I need to place the engine to
eliminate it hitting the firewall when it pitches?

Mike C.

Here it is. I think you are going to need a dry sump system for two
reasons.
One, capacity and two, oil pick up when tilted down or back.

Dry Sump would solve a lot of problems but add a lot of $$.  Once It is
mounted, I can do some worst case scenarios and see if the pickup tube
is uncovered.  Could you tell what the optimal distance from the
firewall should be from the pulley so there isn't any interference at
+/- 10?

Mike C

1.88 inches. The problem is any reasonable size oil pan is going to hit
the X brace when tilted up.

-------------------------------------

Also I think you will have a problem with the turbo charger not clearing
the right side motor mount. I have a TO4 to model but I would need a
good sketch of the exhaust manifold you are using. Some straight on
pictures would help.
One looking straight back. And one looking straight down from the top
should do it.

Thanks Paul, I can take some tonight and send them tomorrow.  It is
going to be a tight fit... That's why the motor mount hard points were
moved to the outside of the longerons and the firewall modified to get
some extra width... Here are a few pics of the hard points.  I can send
you the dimensions of the hard point also.

Mike C

Dimension would help.

 Hi Paul
Here are a few pictures of the turbo and intake along with some pictures
of my thoughts about the braces.  The engine is 2.5" from the Firewall
to the Pulley.  I clocked the Turbo and was able to place a brace
directly from the right thrust mount to the upper hard point.  That's
good News.  Then, I used some string to show what I was thinking about
for the braces.  Let me know what you think.  Oh, the dimensions of the
motor mounts hard points are: 19.6" from Left to right and vertical
15.2"

Mike C

Not quite readable Mike. do you have a higher rez camera?
What are the dimensions of the hard points from the nominal thrust
line or zero pitch angle and zero off set angle point on the firewall?
