slots in the VR sensor bracket or wheel.

Sure, but you'll kick me off in short order.  I'm building a plugs-up
installation with an electric-water pump.  You'll have to look at
http://ernest.isa-geek.org to see the crazy place I'm putting my oil and
water cooler.  I'm dishing the alternator for a permanent magnet
generator.  And I've got some really strange ideas on how to supercharge
the intake.  Yeah.  You'll run me off real quick.

Never hurts to confirm conventional wisdom :)

But I suggest you mount a cylinder head temperature thermocouple
like Mark Steitle did on his 3 rotor. If you have any trapped
steam pockets  or inadequate water flow they should show up right away.
