> Tony, I agree with everything except the mag. Mag have problems on
high
RPM engines. At least standard aircraft mags do. I've seen the
problems
first hand. We never determined if it was, internal coil reluctance
or
overheating. We couldn't reliably get over 5000 rpm.

Well doesn't someone already have a mag setup with a custom front
cover?
Tony
Tony,
There may be someone. I don't know if they are flying. I am just
passing along
My experience with aircraft mags on high RPM engines. Durring my time
with Kawasaki
there was a guy who made a nice setup to run a mag on a Kawasaki 900 Z1
(1974).
This bike was running at Bonneville. The intent was to only need to
start the bike using
a external battery, and make all the runs running on the mag. No
charging system. The
machine would start and run just fine, but when running under load
would mis-fire above
5800 RPM. We just didn't believe it was the mag at first, but later
experiments showed that
it was. (He had a spare and changed it out and the second unit had the
same problem)
Finally in despiration we put a battery in it and put the original
points system, it ran perfectly
after we doubled the springs. The rider/owner hadn't be able to run the
engine wide open
at home before heading to the flats. This might not be a problem with
newer mags. I am
gunshy of the aircraft mags since this experience. The bike ran well
running a total loss
battery and coil ignition. I am not that worried about electronic
ignition because my last
race bike ran only a total loss system. This bike was using a fuel pump
and electronic ignition
with no charging system. This bike would run 3-4 HOURS on a standard
motorcycle battery.
If you put a charging alarm on your system there is plenty of time to
land even if your
alternator goes down.
