Hi Paul, there was an interesting discussion on the KRS builders list
this week. I think some of our guys would be interested in commenting on
this latest idea. Maybe it has been done already?

We have a firewall to protect us from the engine if things get too hot.
It always bothered me to cut a big hole in it to route air from the
_hottest_ item exposed in the plane.... so, we all have oil coolers, if
as Dan says, the only change is to use longer oil cooler lines and mount
it in an insulated air-box in the cabin, with a flipper door so it
ALWAYS gets full outside air but dumps it into the cabin or overboard -
or some mix, how it that more risky or complicated? The air-box is used
on most cars for years.... Sounds simpler than the toaster to me :-)

Y'all are making this too complicated. Put on a heat muff, get your air
supply from fresh air, and keep a CO2 warning device in the cockpit.
Be sure to be able to shut it off and have a fresh air source that
you can open when you need it. Simple and cheap.

The oil cooler would work if you slowed the air down
to pick up more heat. A heater at home only puts out
120 degree air. A heat pump
only has 90 degrees. you will need to seal the cabin
up and then install an outlet for the air to travel
through the plane.

The stock cabin heater in the Velocity kit is an engine oil cooler mounted
in the nose with a baffle door to control if the heat goes in the cabin or
to the outside. You can check out some of the builders sites to see the
install.

Interesting idea to take the heat from the oil cooler and one I also have to
think about to get warm air to the cockpit. Thanks for the tip. I checked
out the Velocity site. I'm not sure I understand why a fan or blower is
needed though. Unlike a car at low speeds an airplane should have heaps of
of dynamic pressure in the duct to take advantage of. By building a
diversion dam (damper) to power the system then one has to concentrate on
how to control the exit of the air from the cockpit for a balanced system.
Otherwise I would think it would be easy to ruin the dynamics of the air
flow through the oil cooler. It might make some really hot air though:)
This is probably why heat muffs are placed around exhaust pipes after the
turbo. Yes monitoring CO is a must.
