Is it reliable?

Phantom was flying one of the AIXIRO wankels in an ultra-light. They put
135 hours on the motor and had a major failure. Apparently the manufacturer
used plastic to retain the bearings. The plastic failed and the bearing
went places they're not supposed to. A Taiwan mini-helicopter company was
also looking at this engine. There is a 250 cc Italian cart wankel called a
Saetta. They may have just built it for the publicity. Haven't heard
anything about them for awhile.
The Rotamax charge-cooled engines are still under development. The Block II
engines with fuel injection, a lighter flywheel and starter are due in
August. They are rated 85 hp at 7750 for the single and 170 at 7750 for the
twin. The lightened versions are very attractive on paper, but
charge-cooled engines do have a slight fuel consumption penalty. Rotamax
believes that they can get the oil to fuel ratio down to 150:1. Hmmm.
These engines use a proprietary lining in the rotor housing that sound like
ceramics to me. Haven't heard any feedback on them yet. I believe that
only 200 Block I engines were built and sent out to prospective OEM types.
Have yet to find one for resale on the net. Early days. We've been looking
at them for a portable blower system in mine disasters. The hang-up is the
very hot exhaust around dangerous gases and the fact that the inlet
temperature in some of those mines can run 130-140 degrees with obvious
effects on inlet charge temps. I'm very tempted to pick up one of the Block
II engines on spec and see what can be done with it.
