This could be the answer to the question re a rotary and a hydraulic tranny.

Tom Kasmer and the Hydristor Featured in Business Week Magazine
The September 18, 2006 issue discusses hydraulic transmissions in the quest to save fuel in its "Science & Technology" section. The full text of the
article is available online and can be read here: .
What are they claiming as an efficiency? The killer with most hydraulic motor/pump combos is efficiency. For use in an aircraft anyway.
Bill Jepson
The weight and heat of driving a prop with hydraulics makes this totally out of the question on an aircraft.
Have you ever seen the size of a hydraulic pump large enough to handle 300 hp? And the noise..... OMG are they loud. In the past I tested many pumps
on a 50 HP electric test stand, and you thought a rotary was loud..... And then there is the complexity of pump, motor, reservoir, pressure filter, scavage
filter, case drain filter, controls....
But what a speed brake, as you could stop the prop with the engine running!

I am from the Dark Side of the rotary: I wish to make an automotive application. (cue Imperial Death March music from Star Wars)
BUT!
Mr. Lamar has converted me!
A turbocompounded rotary, pressurizing a hydraulic system, running at the most efficient rpm,
scavenging the most power possible, is the way to go.
The other rotary fora seem to be fixated on how to draw more power at 30% efficiency.
After reading Mr. Lamar's turbocompounding articles, such approaches seem to me to be
sheer, utter madness.
So I would like to convey the power generated by the efficient, turbocompounded rotary
motor, to the wheels by something other than mechanical connection. I thought that
hydraulic transmission of power would be most efficient in terms of weight, simplicity,
reliability and available technology.
I want to make the most efficient, lightest weight and reliable powertrain for
the lightweight car, the Ariel Atom.
Would I be allowed to continue to ask about such an application on this forum?
I fear to ask in other fora: they would not understand and I would not get
the answers I seek. I fear I would get only scorn and derision.
Is there a safe harbor for a Lamar-ite in automotive rotary-dom?
Thanks,
Les :-)
