Paul,
You need to upgrade the stationary gears in your engine to the "high
power" version.
I just compared your gear to the new "high power" gear set.
All people using the low power automatic transmission version of this
engine need to know the gears are of the old 13b style and do not have
the added heat treating, oil holes or the locking set screw that the
"high power" gears have. I consider this mandatory upgrade for any low
power RX-8 engine going into an aircraft or making more than stock power.
Larry
I did not know that. We are not going to run it over 7500 RPM anyway.
Tracy has been running a low power four port RX8 engine for a couple
of years. He estimated it had about 200 HP.
This engine is not going into an aircraft anyway. I will use it
to measure the HP of the p-port on the dyno and develop carbs, EFI
and mechanical fuel injection. Hopefully it will generate around
240 HP at 7500 RPM on a carb.
Does this apply to the recent low power RX8 engine with the six ports?
Mazda did away with the four port low power RX8 engine a year or two
ago.

We would have to have one of the Mazda dealers or Mazdatrix pull up the gear
part numbers for the latest low power engine to see what they are. I suspect
they are still the previous low power gears.
Maybe I am just chicken..... but I have broke stationary gears and it is the
one failure mode that will stop the engine from running even if you are
Merlin the magician.
Larry
Most of those failures happen at racing RPM. Racers run them up to 11,500.
Due to the gear box ratio and prop limitation we never see over 7500 RPM.
So far nobody has broken a gear in an aircraft engine to my knowledge
and I have been here for almost ten years. Ken and Everett Hatch were
using NOS as well. Several have run turbo chargers.
