Hey Paul. I have been following the site for a while but I haven't heard
much of your ideas lately. Hows that compound turbo system coming
along? or even the 35mpg x8? I always tell friends about those things
when the rotary engine comes up for discussion but I do not know if your
still pursuing it. Let me know about any updates or projections for
production. -Anthony-
Nothing so far from Mazda other than direct injection on the new 16B.
The larger 16B, if installed in the RX8, will allow running a higher axle
ratio reducing the 4,000 engine RPM at 80 MPH which should improve the highway MPG.
My guess is 2 or 3 MPG using the EPA highway test cycle depending on
the new rear axle ratio. 25 MPG to 28 MPG or so. I don't know what the
EPA city cycle will show if any.
Rumor has it that Boeing Rocketdyne is working on a turbo compound
Wankel rotary. Probably for UAV use. I gave up on it as too expensive for
my resources. Doug in Japan is still working on it.
I have been focused lately on building an RX8 p-port engine
to see what negative effects we can expect from the side exhaust ports.
The RX8 p-port engine is being assembled by Mazdatrix as we speak and
will be installed and tested on their dyno. A 13B p-port engine installed
in a four place Velocity aircraft recently averaged 205 MPH and burned
12 gallons an hour in the Dayton Ohio to Oshkosh Wisconsin 500 mile
air race.
I am also working on a very simple, reliable and low cost mechanical fuel injection
system to make it easier to install Mazda rotaries in aircraft. It is in
the NC machine shop as we speak. It is basically a fuel pressure regulator integrated
into a low pressure fuel injection system. The amount of fuel injected is directly
proportional to the intake manifold pressure. An accelerator pump is intrinsic
to the design. When the slide throttle is jammed open the fuel delivery is
increased beyond on the needs of the engine as the RPM lags the rapid increase in manifold
pressure. This richen the mixture temporarily for engine acceleration purposes.
It has a manual mixture control so the mixture can be set to a lean 18:1 or so
for low power, high altitude cruise.
