Paul, Whatever happened to the Megasquirt?

Funny you should bring up the PicAxe conversation just now,
I've been looking at Megasquirt and LS1 coils this last week.
The coils are rather cool, feed them 12V constant, they're
smart enough to charge up when another line goes to 5V, and
discharge when it drops to zero.  In other words a PicAxe
tied to one of them, watching a VR sensor and toggling one
line hi/low at the proper time would be pretty close to a
complete DIS.

If you want a real soldering iron jump on eBay and search
for Metcal.  RF powered, instant heat.  Wait long enough
and you can put together a decent system for $100 or so,
maybe a few bucks more.  The $400 versions are probably
nice, but I doubt that they work any better then the cheap
stuff, at least at the hobbiest level. Even $100 sounds steep
for a soldering iron, I know, but use it once and you'll be a
believer.

IMHO the Megasquirt requires a level of expertize that
is beyond most people. It is conventional thinking. One powerful
computer that does everything. Very difficult program to understand
let alone change.
