Hi Paul,

As you mention, drawing FW-DWG2 is the correct layout for the 801.  If
the thrust is lowered by the 56.94mm this will allow for a bit of
clearance, about 1", between the cowl and the modified water pump
outlet.  There should be sufficient ground clearance as the Zenith
drawing BOTTOM-HALF.JPG describes 15.5" of ground clearance with the
Sensenich S76EM8 with the O-360 thrust location.  Although when I scale
the distance from the stock thrust line to the ground on drawing
COWL-DIMS.JPG I come up with 48.31" which would leave about 10" at the
stock location and therefore slightly less than 8" if lowered by
56.94mm.  What is your opinion on this modification?  I would rather not
have to bubble the cowl if possible.

The top mount point attaches to the forward fuselage tubular frame at
the 40mm x 100mm plate with two 3/8" bolts.

Jerry, the engine is a 1988 13B, not the Renesis.

13B not RX8/Renesis that changes things. Makes the alternator easier
to mount on the side. You need to cut your water pump down Pat.
I have a step by step to do that.

Pat, OK here is what it looks like with the thrust line lowered 59 mm.

Too tight. I think we are better off with the stock Lycoming thrust
line as that gives us more room behind the engine and more prop clearance
for rough fields. All you must do is cut down the water pump.

If you lower the thrust line the cowl will need major modifications.

Another option, keeping the thrust line at the Lyc location, is extending
the cowl 2.6 inches. The CG of the Mazda is about where the Schertz
beam is. That is further aft than the Lycoming. The Lyc CG is 362 mm behind
the prop flange and the 13B CG is 430 mm behind the prop flange. That means
you can push the engine forward about 2.6 inches and keep the weight
and balance the same. It is easy to extend the cowl as all you need is
a 2.6" wide flat strip all around the back side of the cowl.

This is what I recommend. Gives max room behind the engine for rear
motor mount and accessories. Also provides more room for the cooling rad.
