What does the hydrochloric acid do?

George,
In the earlier incarnations of the HAA block, the hcl was used to etch
the raw aluminum away from the surface so the final hone would be acting
on the silicon particles rather than the aluminum. This gives a better
prepared surface and makes the hones last longer. The aluminum tends to
clog them up.
