Here is the story behind this piezo electric injector invention.

Mazda is using them in their diesel powered car and probably (I'm
guessing)
in the new 16X, because the engineer I met at a recent show said the direct
injected rotary injector was made by Siemens.

Now I wonder why they are shooting straight down from the top rather
than in
from the sides. Room constraints probably because they are using oil
injectors above the port. That and perhaps they want to inject the fuel
AFTER the intake port and the air is compressed somewhat. With the P-port I
believe I can inject the majority of the charge before the port closes.
Might be wrong so I am hedging my bet by going with a system that can
inject
under higher pressures. Present electro-magnetic injectors were limited in
that way.

Paul, A guess as to why the 16X is injecting at the top of the housing.
Since one of the rotary's difficulties is making high compression
without flame quench, and driveability and torque is the motivation for
the 16B to begin with, perhaps they (Mazda) didn't want another hole
near the spark plugs? The penetration wouldn't effect high end power but
might cause a reduction in the all-important automotive mid range. What
do you think?

That is most definitely a major factor. OMC went to all the trouble
to design surface mount spark plugs for that reason. That is also why
the trailing spark plug holes are so small in the Mazda.

So fuel entering into the vicinity above the P port would be pissing across
the wind just like the Leman engine injecting perpendicular to the intake
manifold after the slide throttle.  I fail to see the difference between the
two.

My point exactly.
My point was supposed to be.... it don't make any diff.
As opposed to injecting along the flow.
