Paul,  I just ran across these photos of a McClaren inspired replica
under construction.  Since I am (planning to)  scratch build a CH 701
including  a custom cowl, I  wonder if a similar radiator installation
could be implemented?   Probably the radiator would have to be angled
so that the air is exited downward.  One of the super light weight
Rotamax engines or an all aluminum single would allow the front of the
cowl to be extended forward if necessary to accommodate the rad
without causing c.g. concerns. Jerry

That is a good example of how not to do it.
Here is a Kucheman & Weber  type duct design.

Paul,
I never did pay enough attention in school and now I'm kicking myself. In
the K&W diffuser can I assume that the plan view shape is the same as the
profile ? How does angling the core effect efficiency, should the core be
angled about it's midpoint, top or bottom and would an "undiffuser" aft of
the core help the flow ?

John

You need to draw a median line in the duct and tailor the
area of the duct according to the K & W curves.
That is a guess on my part for non perpendicular ducts.

In a perfect situation the core would not be angled.

Here are perfect K & W ducts that are perpendicular.

If the rad is flat under or along side the engine we use
what is called a Kays & London wedge diffuser instead.

There are some examples on the web site.
