Paul,
I would recommend taking it to a shop that does repairs on engine blocks.They have the most experience on that kind of stuff.  Just finished a
welding course at the local community college where we had a lengthly
discussion on welding cast iron.  That was the instructor's recommendationif you don't have the experience to do it yourself.  According to the
instructor, he said all cast iron is not the same.  Some of it welds better
than others.  The block repair shops heat the heads and blocks to drive off
the oil and get them to uniform temps before welding.  Hope that helps.  Jim

We've welded Cast iron in the past a few times [I do design work
for a welding shop]. While pre-heating the casting is important,
more importantly we've found, is the rate at which the casting is
allowed to cool down. We've even gone as far as to 'post' heat
the part to keep it cooling evenly.. and extend the cooling time..
We also use lots of blankets on the parts to help them
retain their heat over a longer cool down.. If it cools too quickly
it will just re-crack on the weld.  I'm not sure how much faith I'd
have in a part which operates at a fairly high temperature like an
exhaust manifold being welded.. and not cracking at some
future point. If there was some other way to get the same
result [new manifold] I'd be inclined to go that route. [It's that
same old.. we can't roll over to the side of the road if it breaks,
kinda  thinking..]
