Paul,
I am a bit confused. But here is the question(s) I have that really does
relate to rotary exhaust, just without the heat and velocity.
These large fans exhaust air out of the barns horizontally and the air
currents / wind at that time carry the air and particulates across the
ground (to aggrevate me).
I am trying to give the company some info / facts that ducting that
exhaust UP and away would allow neighbors and me to breath better.
And possibly a baffle to restrict the particulates or at least some of
them from going into the air.
The fans presently are belled on the outside. Which the company says
allows the air to loose energy and more easily escape the confines of
the duct. (Hmm, really?)
All this is much the same with the rotary exh, most often due to
necessity, bend 90 degrees into an expanding volume and baffle /
diverter plates to further reduce energy.
Seems very similar. Where do I get some info?
If I don't get them to do something with the smell, you guys will not
want to fly to the farm airstrip for a visit. :(
But, if I do get them to duct the air UP, it is recommended to hold your
breath while in the pattern.

Ducting the air up 90 degrees will help just a little bit as far as
the stink
of just the air is concerned. What will really help is the
particulate content of the
air, if any, will be removed. It will accumulate inside the 90 bend
due to centrifugal force
throwing the particulate outwards towards the outside wall. This
will have
to be cleaned from time to time depending how much particulate is in
the air.
That alone should reduce the stink from just the particulate itself.
As it is now that stuff is falling to the ground and accumulating
and of course
stinking in the process.

If the chicken barn is dumping particulate on you, it should be possible
to force them to filter the exhaust - almost like they are littering on
you. Should be able to determine this with some simple tests.
However, I suspect that the stink is more likely coming from aromatic
gases - hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane - not mechanically
filterable. It should be possible to electrochemically react-out these
gases. Expensive, but possible.
A better solution in my opinion is to talk the owners into investing in
a recycling plant which would recover these gases and produce a little
power at the same time. Or make the plant self-cooling/heating. Birds
don't like to be too hot.

It seems unlikely that ducting the gas upwards would have any consistent
benefit - depends too much on atmospheric conditions. At least not with
any practical length (height) duct.
The bell mouths on the ducts probably do indeed increase the volume of
air moved per watt of electricity consumed. A duct mouth that has the
same diameter as the duct body (fan diameter) will cause a larger
pressure rise at the duct mouth than one with a bell mouth..
