Paul,
I am a bit confused. But here is the question(s) I have that
really does
relate to rotary exhaust, just without the heat and velocity.
These large fans exhaust air out of the barns horizontally and
the air
currents / wind at that time carry the air and particulates
across the
ground (to aggrevate me).
I am trying to give the company some info / facts that ducting that
exhaust UP and away would allow neighbors and me to breath better.
And possibly a baffle to restrict the particulates or at least
some of
them from going into the air.
The fans presently are belled on the outside. Which the company says
allows the air to loose energy and more easily escape the confines of
the duct. (Hmm, really?)
All this is much the same with the rotary exh, most often due to
necessity, bend 90 degrees into an expanding volume and baffle /
diverter plates to further reduce energy.
Seems very similar. Where do I get some info?
If I don't get them to do something with the smell, you guys will not
want to fly to the farm airstrip for a visit. :(
But, if I do get them to duct the air UP, it is recommended to
hold your
breath while in the pattern.

Ducting the air up 90 degrees will help just a little bit as far as
the stink
of just the air is concerned. What will really help is the
particulate content of the
air, if any, will be removed. It will accumulate inside the 90 bend
due to centrifugal force
throwing the particulate outwards towards the outside wall. This
will have
to be cleaned from time to time depending how much particulate is in
the air.
That alone should reduce the stink from just the particulate itself.
As it is now that stuff is falling to the ground and accumulating
and of course
stinking in the process.

Well of course, just like the heat and energy hitting the outside wall
of the bend just inches from the exhaust port opening.
Any suggestion of what type of surface inside the tube?
Maybe a removable panel acting as the filter, without restriction of air
flow, too much?
OR, directing the flow downward toward the ground. Even a substance to
collect the particulate, keeping it there, vs pumping it out or up into
the air for all neighbors to breath.
I just wonder if they have already tried some of this and didn't like
the additional cost and work of cleaning the ducts and whatever type
filtering method. Probably frequently.
Lets see, 20K sq ft, with 25K chickens per, times 30 barns and building
more....lots of particulate stink.
Maybe just time for me to move. They're not going to change the
location of the barns relative to surrounding farm houses, even tho we
were here long before them.
Big corporations doing as they like.

ps. One last thing. It always stinks worse away from the barns, at the
surrounding farm homes, compared to being right around the barns.
What's up with that? How come?
Are we(neighbors) getting the greater dose of particulates due to
slowing air velocity? It's the worst in calm winds.
The fixed volume of stink coming out of the barn is being diluted
more by the higher winds.

The simplist solution for me, and my neighbors would have been for
Sanderson Farms to build their barns farther away from human
habitation. Something they can't get their brain around, due to making
$ getting in the way.
This aggrevates me so much because it takes me away from working on the
F1 Rocket and the RX7s. Maybe I just need to use an O2 bottle and mask.
