Paul,
Going by memory only, I thought the vent line was taken from the return line
( from the Rad) as near as possible to the pump, because this was the lowest
pressure area in the system, but your recent diagrams show the vent line
from the Rad. I don't understand why this is better?

That is not primarily a vent line form the rad. That is primarily a cooling system  filling line.  The primary vent line should come from
the highest point in the block and that is the end housings closest to the gear box.

The pressure in the block varies very little from point to point.
There probably is more of a pressure drop across the rad than the entire block
from water pump outlet to block exit.
