would a 13B-T S5 TURBO II be a good candidate for aircraft build engine.
C. Smith
It would but the turbine is way over powering the compressor
at constant high engine power and it will blow up after about 2 hours at
12,000 feet. Half a dozen have been destroyed already.
The over powering is necessary for automotive use as it
allows the turbocharger and car to accelerate quickly.
A way must be found to reduce the high engine power steady state RPM of
the turbo charger. You can trim the turbine blades which is probably the
cheapest way of doing it. That also reduces the centrifugal loads
on the blades.
You can install a larger compressor as there is some interchangeability
of the parts.
You can extract power out of the compressors end using a shaft and feed
it back into the e-shaft. Turbo compounding. Advantage is lower fuel burn.
Expensive.
Install a diverter valve in the exhaust system so not all the exhaust gas
goes through the turbine. Waste gates have proven to be ineffective
with the Mazda rotary stock turbo in aircraft use.
