 I just ran across this data on the 2nd gen RX7 mass airflow sensor.
 Bosch wrote it up as part of the L jetronic injection system manual.
 I suspect it is made by Denso under license and installed
 in 1986 to 1991 RX7's. I don't think it is a computer.
 I think it is similar to a 555 system. All hardware and no
 software.

 Perry Mick has been flying this system for years in his Long EZ
 with hundreds of hours.

 It is very reliable. He has tricked the ECU into thinking it is
 still in  car. He has even installed an RX7 instrument panel
 in the cockpit.

 There are probably over 100,000
 of these systems out there. They are real cheap I suspect.

 This may not be doable for Aviation and I have no doubt that someone will
 tell me why, however all ideas should be explored if only to eliminate
them
 IMHO. Now some motorcycle carbs have floating slides whereby the density
of
 the incoming air varies the slide compared to the throttle position - for
 altitude compensation. I can't remember exactly how this is accomplished
by
 lifting the slide with the incoming air. There is a sloped face which is
 supposed to have a critical angle to accomplish this task. It may be there
 is a calibrated spring that air density is pushing against.

 This is the simplest solution air density adjustment I have heard about.

The motorcycle carbs sound very much like the Keihin CV. They are altitude
compensating but since they where designed for motorcycles, their range of
'auto' adjustment could be very limited for aviation. They are commonly
found on H-D's (Harley Davidson's) made after 1988. Just about every H-D
bike including the Buells comes with a Keihin from factory. They are known
to compensate well up to 11,000 ft (Colorado Rockies,) above that is any
ones guess. I recall someone on this list saying they had CV carbs but
removed them for some reason or another, maybe they would know the
limitation. If they do work, just go down to your local H-D dealer and $200
later (about $100 each) your cooking with gas.
The only problem other than altitude limitations I can think of is not
being
able to manually lean the mixture at cruise. You'd still fly just fine, but
fuel mileage would suck. Maybe.

Last time I looked the 50 mm where about $750 as I recall.
You will need two for a p-port engine. I got lots of data
on them.

Wow, $750!!!! Your right, I just checked (been a while since I had a
dirtbike) and the price have risen. But the smaller (34mm, 41mm, etc.) carbs
are still ~$200 if you shop around. When you say 50mm do you mean OD, ID,
engine side or air box side? If its airbox side, check out 80's Honda
CH125/250 dirtbikes. Maybe you can find a used carb of a bike on eBay.

Who knows 50 mm is what the manufactures rate them as. There are at least
half dozen different brands. They all have the same problem. Too expensive
and too hard to manually lean.
