Since my Windoze computer died last year I haven't had access to Rhino.
To bad, just when I was getting more proficient:) Funny the average
life of any Windows base equipment I have ever touched can be measured
in months. Digital watches are the same with me. Perhaps I need to ask
Uri Geller:) Macs never a problem. Perhaps the Mac Rhino version has
the bugs worked out it by now.
Question Michiwa has a Japanese keyboard Windows XP laptop that she
spilled cocoa on and now a few keys don't work. She is donating the
computer to the rotary engine project. Assuming I use a external
keyboard can I wipe the hard drive and reinstall a English operating
system on it?
If so I can be up and running with Rhino again.
Colin, the design probe sounds similar to what I used in measuring water
flows. If you can direct be to a picture or part number on Rock Auto I
can make a decision about using it. I want to start testing by next
month.

PC's over here are in the $200 range if your monitor still works.
There is a weekly ferry service that connects Shanghai to Osaka/Kobe.
The ferry's destination alternates each week between Osaka and Kobe.
The journey takes two days. A second class ticket on this Japan-China
International Ferry Service costs about US$180.
I know a nice hotel (Nanjing) right down on the walk street for $50 a night.
Not far from Pizzahut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Howard Johnsons. :)

Is it a major brand name laptop?
Can you get an English version of XP over there?
Most modern laptop key pads have a waterproof barrier - most because of the
newer key pads.
A computer service shop can clean the key pad and unstick the keys. Its a
matter of using the right cleaning solution (with the battery pulled of
course) which a computer service center would have and be able to do. Most
would rather replace the key pad. It must be totally dry before powering up!
If she has the original install disks it might have language options on it
and it might not. If it does you can re-install XP in english.
If not Bill Gates will get you for another copy.
Any computer hard drive can be wiped clean and an operaing system reloaded.
Make sure you use the same version as originally installed. Also most
windoze OS's have on the same install disks the various language versions -
odds are you dont have those. That'll cost you the price for a a fresh
version. With the brand name and model number of the laptop you can download
the laptop drivers to get back into business and there lies another
potential problem - to connect you need the drivers and you need the drivers
to down load the software. Been there done that. If you have another
computer that will burn CDs you can pass the drivers over form the other
computer.
After doing all of that you might not still be clear if dammage from the
spill was done to the mother board.
Been building my own for about 15 years and am able to keep them running but
some times it gets to be a pain in the butt so I keep at least two up at any
time to be able to fix the one that fails.
